Fresh embrace

Nothing better than the purifying carrying of the linen that knows of being cleaned up, after the shower or outside the bathtub. Embroidered and frayed like a time or simply smooth and pure, the towel in linen is the comfort of excellence.

Different from the classic sponge towels, that one in linen has numerous advantages: it dries the skin more quickly, it is soft, anti-allergic and fresh.

They dry themselves in a hurry, even if it remains more creased, but who loves linen loves also its folds. Indicated for the delicate skin of babies, for taking off make-up, after shaving and for those who have problems with acne.

Beautiful and elegant, an irrenounceable complement for furnishing  modern bathrooms: real scenes with furnishings and searched details searched and wisely bounded together between them, in order to make every daily gesture unique.

A perfect table

To prepare means “to prepare the table for a meeting “and making it in the best  way is a sign of respect towards  our hosts. Or for an informal lunch or a supper for work, a table prepared with simplicity, taken care of the details and a touch of class, it will make you understand who’s seating  with you, how much importance is given to this encounter. Here some suggestions.

The tablecloth is the Queen of the table; it can be  linen, cotton, with  designs or in united ink: the most important thing is that it is adapted for the type of  reception, more or less elegant and that the  agreements with the plates, but above all, it has to be to be perfectly ironed

The alternatives for the tablecloth can be the American type of tablecloth, perfect for the meeting between friends and family lunches, or the  runner (the “tête à tête” for the French people).

The plates, put down on underplates or put directly on the tablecloth, have to be placed in equal distance one with another; if they are decorated with designs, frieze, decorations, these have to be turned towards the edge of the table, so that the person seated can see them in their correct position. When the service is  carried out by one  or more  waiters, a single plate is laid on the table (when there is also soup served with lunch, the deep plates or cups for the ‘consommé’ are also put on the table) and the waiters supply or  change plates for the other courses. When instead there is no service, the table can be prepared with three plates, the appetizer, first and second; the others can be taken by hand, presented on a small table or an undercarriage; obviously the number of necessary plates varies according to the courses of the menu.

Also the number of cutlery varies according to the menu; their position is however fixed: on the left of the plate the forks, in this order: normal and those for fish; on the right the knives, normal and for  fish, with the blade turned towards the plate, and the spoon for soup; the little spoons for dessert are offered horizontally in front of the plate, the fork with the handle face towards left and the spoon towards right; between those two can also be inserted a knife for fruit in the same sense of a teaspoon.

An alternative can be:  carrying them  according to the moment,  supported by the saucer for fruit or dessert.

The glasses are slightly put  to right of the plate in front of the knife; there must be at least two, one for  water (the largest one) and, to its right, one for  wine (the smellest one); if more wine is served, the number of the glasses increases, but they are  always placed to the right of that one for  water (in that case, for  water you can also use a glass without stand, that  varies  from the others). For valuable wines the glasses must be absolutely without colour: the ink of the wine, its tonalities, its glares and its "body"  must be transparent without uncertainties. The best form is the one of tulip, with the goblet, wide enough to the centre, so that the contact air-wine from which exhales  the scent (bouquet) is found concentrated in the part with slightly more grip of the top.

The wine is served in its bottle, except that one aged, which will have to endure an oxygenation procedure (settling) and needs to be served in a carafe (decanter). It possible, before the dessert, remove all the glasses (only the ones for water) and add the one for  the dessert.

The napkin is put down on the plate or side by the cutlery, if it has not found place on top of the underplate. Or it is placed on the left of the cutlery; some people put it on the right, others on the left; for less important lunches they can also be folded and threaded in a glass.

The bread is  put on the table in appropriate  baskets; sometimes, even if in Italy it is not very frequent, little plates are being used for the bread, put on the left of the plate in front of the forks.

On the table you  cannot forget salt and pepper; for informal lunches a single salt shaker  and a single pepper mill is enough, while for important occasions a small salt shaker and a peppermill is placed next to every plate or between two plates.

Other objects like the cheese bowl, the sauce boat, is put on the table only if they are necessary. On the contrary, ash tray and toothpicks are announced publicly.

The water, if mineral, is left  in its original bottle, if it is tapped it has to be served in a carafe.

The centrepiece has to be simple and less cumbersome, and  if with flowers, little perfumed. It is better low in order not to disturb the view of whom is in front. According to the occasions and  the season, the flowers can be replaced by candles, also buoys, fresh fruit or vegetables.

Don’t ever commit the error to favour the lead table above the meal! This would mean frivolousness  and excessive protagonism towards the head of the household.

Italy that seduces

" Today the reputation of Italy  in the world is big for the seduction of its way of life, which  is not codified in any book and which waits for a writer that collects examples of many lives, ancient and contemporary. Who has formed this reputation? Not the rhetorics, not men of letters, not political men, certainly not generals and admirals, not  administrators and not even  catholic priests, that are  surely  a genuine product of  Italian civilization.
More than ever the reputation belongs to narrators, to poets, painters and sculptures and architects, to actors, cooks and  tailors,  sportswomen,  skin-divers and air ones, to the women who fall in love and to the Italian lovers, the beautiful women of  cinematography and to the guy of the road… the increasing mass of  tourists represents an international voting in favour of the Italians. It feeds those Italians with a certain love without esteem, exchanged again by Italians with an exaggerated appraisal accompanied with a not too much love.
Italy of Renaissance, the unitary parenthesis of this disunited country, appears ended. But the universal Italy – the one that  imports more - continues to occupy and to worry our minds for work of the single Italian individuals, always admirable get out of the way of embarrassment and correcting the painful and onerous situations in which their captains lead them. Their industry and their genius, their ability to resolve with a feature of astuteness or assiduousness of work, their personal problems never end from the harding in admiration”.

Sheets and quilts… the innovations for the summer

We will never get tired to repeat and to write how comfortable and healthy the linen is for the bed. With the arrival of the summer a sheet in linen can offer well-being, even if warmth overwhelms us, thanks to its elevated thermotransparant qualities, it helps to maintain the skin fresh and dry. The green of pistache nuts, the blue of the sea and the ecrù of the Sicilian earth. From these suggestions of colour the new read line Taormina draws inspiration. Colours that, bound together to the candor of the linen white man, which gives freshness and brightness to the bedroom. An irrenounceable pleasure for the warm season. In order to complete our collection we have created the Selinunte line: quilt light, light, rigorously in pure linen; perfect like summery and ideal bedspread for the fresher evenings.

Consumerism and waste

To someone it could seem unbecoming and ridiculous that a store draws the topic of the consumerism, but our philosophy wants to go beyond

These days people buy more than really is needed, not really necessity or for pleasure, but for what an object represents, because it is a status symbol. Objects have become so invasive in our life to replace progressively to replace affections and human relations, to soothe insecurities, giving confirmations and feelings of being able and superiority. In the meantime our burn-up level erodes natural reserves of the planet and causes the risk for life on Earth for the future generations. The assets, that were once broken but could be repaired, are now replaced because economically it suits more.

Perhaps consumerism is a phenomenon born in the mature development of the western, sceptical, individualistic civilization, deprived of ideals and certainties. It’s a question of moderating or checking it and possibly finding a remedy for the disasters that it is producing. Already today the spread of a new sensibility is perceived: building more in the forefront orients itself towards bio-compatible materials, industry renews by reaching alternative energy forms like wind, water and solar. The knowledge that water, air and ground are precious resources, to respect and protect, is making a beneficially road a bit anywhere.

Continuing to acquire assets that last a few years or even a season, because fashion, that is imposing us or because the low price invites us to make it, what is and always will be, with disadvantage and stupid.

Often in fact, behind low prices insufficient quality is hidden, exploitation and lack of respect for the environment. The fact about the law under our eyes, but blind for the craving for buying pretending not to see. Convinced to have made a good transaction, we find again between the hands, a head that after little washings loses colour, softness or even becomes nearly unusable.

And therefore?

Our philosophy is also this: to sell a product that will last for many years, elegant classic and, with lines and colours without time, realized with woven natural with all respect for the environment.

Linen in the kitchen

Also in kitchen the linen has a place of all respect, indeed exclusive! Very rarely it is used, nevertheless a good kitcken towel can make the difference, certainly if in linen.

It knows well, who not passes the transparency of crystals or the shine of porcelain and those who love to cook and prefer in marmalade syrups etc… Some time ago in fact, the kitcken towel in linen was of common use and was us

ed to filter marmalade or distilled ones like measles, walnuts, ratafià and many others. In the beginning of the ‘900 in the set of a young bride there were 30 towels for kitchen use and 30 dishcloths for the dust  in linen or hemp. Don’t forget the , which are perfect to dry important glasswork, decanter and crystals, making them shining and immaculate; ideal to put aside fresh paste, ravioli or tagliatelle: it is not sticky and conservation improves, essential characteristic also for cheeses and salumi. Used in the production process of parmigiano reggiano, when it is still morbid,  it’s colle

cted in a great linen cloth and transferred to the appropriate bands that will give it its characteristic form. More sophisticated cooks  use it to filter the soup of the cooking of stew and roast.

For those who worry about the more resistant spots, we
will never get bored to remember that, the linen, typical for its recognisable resistance, can be washed till 90° without losing its natural softness. For a perfect ironing instead, only an elevated humidity degree is sufficient.

Luxury is free time ..... Between frenzy and daily engagement, the tyrannous time and the appointments of routine, luxury is a pause. A moment to dedicate to yourself while tasting a coffee, exchanging some words with a friendly person or to grant a whim for the pure satisfaction of a pleasure. Luxury is surrounding you with little daily pleasures or sharing with few intimates. Taking care of yourself with calmness and without haste…. A warm bath, a scent of spray in which dipping yourself, listening to a relaxing CD and to enjoy the intimacy of your own house. Playing in bed with our kids without taking care of time that passes… Simple gestures and little details: the washing of fresh linen, the softness of a sponge that sweetly wraps us after a relaxing shower, a pleasant and comfortable bed, where to rest and abandon the rituals of everyday life for some hours. The pleasure of purity and the simplicity to calmly enjoy our home in safety.

Sleep tight

To sleep well is the better way to recharge oneself in healthier and more natural way. The sleep re-establishes our balance and our energies, favouring the immune system. They are worth always the many extolled rules of gold, feeding, physical activity, etc, but to sleep well, to live better day by day, a good bed is indispensable, also as structure and as linen: bedspreads, pillowcases, sheets and eiderdown. For a natural sleep of quality the linen must be sufficient. In reality the sheet coincides with the linen: the word in fact, derived from the Latin: linteolum, linen cloth, and no other woven texture for the night is more hygienic and healthy. For the sleep, an essential moment in anyone’s life, a moment to relax and of liberation, nothing is better than linen: it is hygroscopic, which means it can absorb liquids till 20% of its weight. This means to maintain our dry and fresh body. It is thermostatic: during winter the linen sheet acts as heat conductor, because the capture from blankets transmitts it to our body. During summer instead, the pillowcase and sheet absorb the heat they disperse in the environment.

It seems that one Italian on five suffers from disturbances of sleep and 14% of chronic insomnia. But recent studies defined that insomnia is not a lack of sleep, but an unsatisfactory sleep, which is the lack of well-being which we should experience while awakening..

The ecological detergents

When we talk about detergents, unfortunately who suffers the most, is the environment. Till a few years ago, to do the laundry we used ash, wrapped up in a piece of cotton, that served as a filter in order not to disperse and not to immerse in the water together with the washing heads. Sometimes they also add some leafs in order to give it a little perfume.

The industrial progress of the last century and the consequent economic development have caused a remarkable increase in one of the most precious assets: w a t e r.

Today’s detergents contain chemical components that, if present in high concentration, can be harmful for human health and the delicate balances of our ecosystem. Since many years companies manufacturers of ecological detergents have searched to obtain effective products, but not noxious for the environment; the result is that the ecological detergents have the same effectiveness of those of petrochemical origin and the differences are indeed amazing. The active tension of the ecological detergents, are obtained from palm and coconut oil and replace the active tension derived from the oil. The microelements, essential oils, replace the synthetic scents, cause of many allergies.

It is necessary to consider that a relation exists, scientifically tried, between using detergents and the health of the skin. It is often stretched to ignore that the detergents remain legacies, although the rinsing, the washing heads, in order then to emit their aggressiveness no more on the dirt, but on the skin.

Therefore we have thought to test some ecological detergents on our heads in linen. The result surprised us. The washed heads were soft and cleaned up. The perfume was absolutely delicate and neutral. Only a small amount is necessary to obtain a good yield. We invite You to read this exhausting guide that explains you the differences between these detergents and those of common use. It will make you think on the fact that using some sagacity must be sufficient. in the gestures that appear daily, in order to improve and to protect our environment that encircles us. www.officinanaturae.com/guide/biodizionario.htm

A splendid bloom

The plant of linen is a simple plant, little striking but gracious, belonging to the family of Linacee, which contains 22 kinds and more than 200 sorts, but only one, Linum usitatissimum, is cultivated and used for the fibre. His habitat is the temporate zones of Europe, from the nord to the mediterranean: IrelandFranceBelgiumSpainEgypt and Italy. The sowing-time is between the 19th and the 25th of march: so less than a week to put the little seed in the ground until the days of autumn. And than waiting. A hundred days more or less to see the little plant grow. The steel is thin and about 70 to 100 cm high. The flower can vary from pure blu to rose or white. When it reaches maturity inside a capsule is formed in which you can find more or less 20 seeds.

The seeds are very little, flat, brown-coloured and light: 1000 seeds weigh 4 to 6 grams and are rich of oil: another gift of this beneficent plant. But the true texture of linen is in the steel in which you can find the textile fibre.

At the moment of harvest the plant is uprooted and the steel is submitted to soaking in big reservoirs with heated water at 37 degrees for 48 hours. One time this process takes 8 days, it begins in the ground where the steels have contact with dawn, or in appropriate reservoirs or in running water, with anxiety, the waitings of these human beings, who have the knowledge of this steels to decide when the moment is arrived to pull the linen out of the water.

After the soaking process the wrapping of the fibres is untied from the wooden part. Today this process succeeds mechanically, but for a long time it had been a tiring handwork, that needed to be followed with attention, when the seeds were most precious and yielded the most.

In general, with 1000 kg of soaked linen you receive more or less 150 kg of long fibres, 40 kg of flax, and about 110 kg of linen seeds.

The fibres then are spined, woven, eventually colorated and transformed in the precious tissue.

Linen…

            Splendid and indestructible like gold…

                        Simple and indispensable like bread…

There is linen and linen

Many times we’ve heard the question if our linen pricks.

Infact often some  products with label ‘100 % linen’ in reality are produced with another fibre that calls Ramiè. The difference between the two threads is big. The linen (Linum usitatissimum) is cultivated in Europe, while the Ramiè Boehmeria is of asian origine. It makes part of the family of Urticacee. This is the first reason why often a tissue, sold like linen, is something completely different than soft, but rigid and vitreous… almost irritating. But how to recognize a tissue in real linen?

Linen is above all gratifying, warm and soft in contact and is characterized by these grains (technically it is called ‘flames’) irregular and evident. The tissue of Ramiè is smooth, rigid and cold. The thread is regular, almost like cotton. The flames are scarce and less evident. It has an accentuated tendency in hairiness, also for simple rubbing  or washing.

Unnecessary to say that our linen doesn’t prick…

The future is bio

Recently the exchange of Pitti Filati has been closed, where the dominant theme was the new tendency in ecological luxury.

Everything begins with the special cultivation of the material before obtaining the thread: organic cotton, stinging nettle, soy, broom, corn, hemp, bamboo, bio linen, and that we meet the most: fibres of milk.

The process of dyeing is completely natural and uses only elements like berries ( bilberry, nuts, chestnuts ) roots, leafs and flowers (marigold, hollyhock.. ), species ( liquorice ) and many other products that you can find in nature. The dyeings do not content chemical additives and have good characteristics in resistance and durability in washing and against light.

This new trend,  provided with a careful ‘Made in Italy’, contains a new concept of luxury, made of new textures, soft, with delicate colours and precious harmony like nature itself.

But also out of respect for humankind and nature that surrounds him.

Thinking of our own healthiness defending skin allergies and permitting to breathe in syntonizing with nature.
